Please find below the solution to the asked query:

This is done to improve the fertility of the soil and to prevent the soil erosion. As when they rot and degrade biologically in the soil they improve the humus/organic content of the soil and also, when they remain in the soil they hold the soil together and prevent them by getting washed away with water or blown aeay by wind.
