Some toffees are bought at the rate of 11 for Rs 10 &the same number at the rate of 9 for Rs 10. If the whole lot is sold at one rupee per toffee. find the gain or loss in the whole transaction.

Given, some toffees are bought at the rate of 11 for Rs 10 and same number at the rate of 9 for Rs 10.

⇒ c.p. of each toffee of first kind =

⇒ c.p. of each toffee of second kind =

Cost price of two toffees of different kinds =

Therefore, combined cost price of one toffee =

It is given that, selling price of 1 toffee = Rs 1

As, C. P > S.P,  therefore the seller must incurred a loss given by:

  • 21

  21%

  • -5

You lost 1% on the transaction.

Call x the number of toffees you bought.

You spent:
(x/2)(10/11) + (x/2)(10/9) = (100/99)x

You earned:
x

Your percent return is profit/expenditure:
x/[(100/99)x] = 99/100 = 99%, or a loss of 1%

Ok

Now

CP Of Each Toffee In First Lot  = Rs 10/11

CP Of Each Toffee In Second Lot = 10/9

Now

Total CP Of Two Toffees = 10/11+10/9 = 90+110/99 = 200/99

Total CP Of One Toffee = 200/99*1/2 = 100/99

Now CP Of 20 Toffees Combined = 100/99 * 20 = 2000/99

Now If They Are Sold At Re 1 For One 1 Toffe

Total CP = 20

Now As We Can See There Is A Loss

So Loss% = 2000/99-20/20 * 100 = 20/99 * 1/20 * 100 = 100/99% Or 1% Approximately
