SSIs were considered important in achieving the basic goals of Five Year Plans due to the following reasons:-
1)SSIs creates employment. As, they use labour intensive techniques. So, they provide employment opportunities to a huge number of people which helps in reducing unemployment from our country.
2) SSIs helps in mobilizing the local resources. As, they promotes the Traditional family skills and handicrafts. And there is a huge demand of handicrafts in urban areas and in other countries also.
3)SSIs also promotes export of our country. They don't need machinery for their work and use their handicrafts. So, they import of machinery from abroad is not needed. As, above Stated, there ias a huge demand of their products in abroad. So, they do huge exports of their product. So, they earn valuable foreign exchange through exports from India.
