Dear Student,

Many changes were introduced by the British after the 1857 revolt, such as the transfer of power from the East India Company to the British crown under the Government of India Act of 1858. A member of the British cabinet in England was appointed as Secretary of State who was ultimately responsible for the governance in India. A group of experts were employed to assist him and it was named as Indian Council. The Governor General of India position was abolished and in its place, a new position called Viceroy was created. The Viceroy is considered as the personal representative to the British crown. Lands were cleared around Delhi to establish military camps and barracks. These were the prominent political institutions that were established in the aftermath of the 1857 revolt. The Indian soldiers were reduced in the army and the proportion of the British soldiers was considerably increased. The British made many policies to protect the rights of zamindars and landlords over their lands.
