The poet stands at a place where two roads (metaphors of life) branch out, one autumn day.He wants to choose one road to walk on but gets confused in his choice due to their being inviting. He chooses one road less travelled by to walk on, thinking that he would walk on the second the other day.But he can't.Later he regrets that his choice has made 'all the difference' in life. Two roads stand for two days, professions or alternatives of life.Man can't retrace his feet from the top of one profression to re-begin another one. This is the enigma of life that is at the centre of the poem.
