Suppose we are asked to write a reply to an invitation. How do we decide whether to write an informal reply or a formal one?

Given below is the answer to your question.

It may or may not be specified. However, this is irrelevant as you can find it out easily. Formal as the name suggests, is written to a higher official or somebody holding a position or office. For example, an editor, the principal, the police commissioner etc.
On the other hand, informal is addressed to a person you are familiar to. For example - your parents, grandparents, family, siblings, cousins, friends etc.
