TAKE 2 GLASS JARS AND FILL THEM WITH WATER. NOW TAKE TWO ONION BULBS AND PLACE ONE ON EACH JAR. OBSERVE THE GROWTH OF ROOTS IN BOTH THE BULBS FOR FEW DAYS. MEASURE THE LENGTHS OF ROOT ON DAY 1 , 2,AND3 . ON DAY 4 CUT THE ROOT TIPS OF THE THE ONION BULB IN JAR 2 BY 2 CM. AFTER THIS OBSERVE THE GROWTH OF BOTH.

QUESTIONS:

1. WHICH OF THE 2 ONIONS HAVE LONGER ROOT, WHY ?

2. DO THE ROOTS CONTINUE GROWING EVEN AFTER WE HAVE REMOVED THE TIPS?

3.WHY WOULD THE TIPS STOP GROWING IN JAR 2 AFTER WE CUT THEM ?

Your friend Ayush is correct!

  • Roots in Jar 1 would have longer roots.
  • Since the root tips have meristematic tissue, after cutting the growth would get affected/delayed.
  • Meristematic tissues present in the root tips enhance growth. If we cut the root tips, automatically growth process would get disturbed.

1ans : the roots of 1st onion have longer roots. Because they have dividing cells(apical meristem)present at the bottom.

2ans :NO, there will be no growth in jar 2s onion.

3ans : Because there is no dividing tissue(apical meristem) present since we had cut the root tips.
