Dear student,
1. Themes:
The poet Maya Angelou has painted a vivid picture of the caged bird as against the free bird. The free bird dares to fly high in the sky, enjoying the warmth of the sunrays. It waits for another current of air to carry it to the fat, juicy worms that it wishes to eat! But, the wings of the caged bird have been clipped, its feet are tied. It has a fearful tone as it sings and yearns for freedom. There are two sharp contrasts in the poem: the free bird that claims the sky as its own and the caged bird whose dreams have been shattered, yet who still sings of freedom!
The poem ' A tiger in the zoo' contrasts a tiger when it is in its natural habitat and when it is imprisoned in a zoo. On a starry night, the poet sees a tiger in a zoo. The tiger moves slowly up and down in his cage. He is full of rage, but is quiet in his helplessness. The poet is moved to pity for the tiger. He says that the tiger should have been in the jungle. He should have been moving quietly in the shadows near some water hole, and waiting for a plump deer to pass that way. Sadly, he is locked behind bars in a concrete cell. He does not take any notice of the visitors and is looking at the brilliant stars with his brilliant eyes. He has to be content with merely looking at the stars. Both the poems explore the theme of freedom and how every living being yearns to be free.
