Dear student,

The pattering sound produced by the raindrops falling on the shingled roof of the cottage has a nostalgic effect on Kinney. He is first reminded of the comfort and warmth of the bed of his childhood. As he continues his reminiscences, he is reminded of the manner in which his mother would lovingly cover him up as he fell asleep. He remembers with a tinge of sorrow his little brother and sister, who are no longer with him. Finally, he is reminded of a beautiful woman whom he loved dearly, but his love went unrequited. In spite of all the sad memories that the rains bring forth in the mind of the poet, Kinney tries to find solace in poetry. However, his search is not vindicated. The final stanza of the poem expresses the poet’s notion of Art.  He feels Art cannot do justice to the love shared between human relationships. According to the poet, art cannot provide solace to the human soul, irrespective of the beauty of the artist's creation.

Regards
