Poverty line in India is decided by the money spend on acquiring minimum calories required by an individual. As decided by the planning commission a rural  households needs around 2435 calories and for consuming that much calories they need to spend around Rs 328.Thus a person who has less than Rs 328 can be considered as below poverty line in rural area. In urban areas minimum calories requirement is 2045 and for consuming this much calories they need to spend Rs 454. A person who has less than Rs 454 is considered as below poverty line in urban areas.
