The 2nd and 3rd transition series elements have very similar atomic radii. WHY?

This is because of the lanthanide contraction. This is associated with the intervention of the 4f orbital which are filled before 5d series of elements. The filling of the 4f orbitals before 5d orbital results in the regular decrease in the atomic radii  which compensates the expected increase in atomic size with the increasing atomic number.
