The chapter begins with the author praising his village: the mangoes found there were the most uniquely sour found anywhere. There was a creeper in the village with leaves so big that one could eat a full meal on it. the village of Hosahalli in Karnataka has been described as a wonderful village by the author. Through the story, we also realise that the author holds village customs and traditions dear as he praises Ranga for still respecting his elders.
