The burden of financial activities of the state through taxes was borne by the third estate alone. Explain this statement

Dear student, The french society was divided into 3 estates - The clergy, The Nobles and the third estate. Taxes were paid by the members of the third estate. The third estate consisted of people like big businessmen, court officials, peasants, landless labours, servant, artisians and merchants and so on. The three taxes paid by them were - 1) Tithes was a tax imposed by church on peasants comprising one - tenth of agriculture produce. 2) Taille which was direct land tax paid by peasants to state. 3) Gabelle or salt tax.
