"The burden of financial activities was born by the third estate alone." Explain the statement.
In the French State of the Old Regime, The french society was divided into three estates-The Clergy, The Nobility and the Third Estate. The clergy consisted of churchmen with special functions in the Church. The Clergy made up 0.8 percent of the total french population and yet they wielded a lot of power and influence over the Monarch and the society. They extracted Tithes, a tax which consisted of 1/10th of the agricultural produce from the peasants. The nobility consisted of the royalty(except the monarch), nobles and landlords. They too had feudal privileges. The First Estate ( The clergy) and the Second Estate( the Nobility) had a lot of privileges and exemptions granted by the French State. The most important of these exemptions was the exemption of paying taxes to the French government. So all the taxes had to be paid by the Third Estate. The peasants of the Third Estate also had to pay Tithes to the Church and feudal dues to the landlords. The Third Estate also had to pay a direct tax to the State called Taille. As we know, a government collects these taxes in order to use it for various purposes such as maintenance of the offices, courts and the royal army. Unlike an ideal government where the poorest should be exempted from paying taxes it was quite the opposite in France. The poor became poorer and taxes therefore became a burden.
