Dear student

The Canterville ghost is the protagonist of the story and we see his character develop and change throughout the story. Though initially, seeming to be a comedy, depicting the ways in which he is bullied by the Otis twins, we see the truth of the matter only when Virginia finds him and starts talking to him. We find that he has changed quite a bit. He is no longer the frightening aspect who wants to scare all people living in the house. He reveals the truth behind his antics, saying that he groans and frightens because he is damned to do so. Whilst alive, he was starved to death by his wife's brothers and in death, he is cursed to roam the halls of the Canterville chase. The story depicts him overcoming his difficulty with the help of Virginia. From a frightening ghost, he turns into a miserable pleading character, begging Virginia to pray for him since she was pure of heart. Finally, his suffering ended, as Virginia's pleas are accepted and he moves on into the afterlife.
