the diffusion through body surface is not enough to fulfil our energy requirements why?

Diffusion is insufficient to meet the oxygen demand of multicellular organisms like humans as the body structure is very complex. Their body contains a large number of cells and all cells are not exposed to air directly. Therefore, diffusion through body surface is not enough to fulfil our energy requirements.
