Yes, surely it would have been a barren planet because the atmosphere is necessary for all living things. For example atmosphere contains oxygen and without the Oxygen present in the atmosphere it would be difficult for us to breathe and without atmosphere even plants cannot make their food because they need Carbon dioxide which a part of air. Therefore without atmosphere earth would be a barren land because soil also need air.
