1) C + O2 → CO2   ∆Hc1 = -393.5 kJ/mol
2) CO + ½ O2 →  CO2   ∆Hc2 = -283 kJ/mol 
We have to find the enthalpy for the following reaction.
C + ½ O2 → CO
Subtrating equation 2) from 1) we get:
C + ½ O2 → CO   ∆Hf = ∆Hc1 - ∆Hc2  
  = -393.5 kJ/mol – (-283 kJ/mol )
                      = -110.5 kJ/mol
