the formula of linear magnification is m = Hi/Ho = -v/u.what determines the sign of m?what is the significance of this sign?

The height of the image i.e Hi determines the sign of magnification as the height of the object is always positive.
If magnification is -ve then the image formed is real. If magnification is +ve then the image formed is virtual.
