The grandmother was not pretty but beautiful.HOW?

The above statement is taken from the story “Portrait of a Lady” written by Khushwant Singh. In the story, Khushwant Singh has very beautifully introduced his grandmother and has also given a very vivid description of his unbreakable relationship with his grandmother.
In the statement “she was never pretty but always beautiful, Khushwant Singh outlines the hidden meaning of the sentence. He brings forth the idea that beauty is not something the facial or the physical appearances that soothe the eyes. But beauty is much wider a word in its concept. Beauty is the serenity and truthfulness of the heart and the soul. This serenity and sacredness of the heart and the soul he finds in his grandmother. Although his grandmother is terribly old with silver locks scattered untidily over her pale puckered face but she is very beautiful. Beauty does not lie in her physical appearance that has withered out over time but it lies in the love that she showers over the narrator throughout the life. True beauty is in her calm soul that does not rebel against the grandson leaving behind his old aged grandmother. Instead her beauty is in the understanding and trust that she has in her grandson.
Thus we can see how the narrator aptly defines this statement in context of his grandmother.
