Exchange energy: The stabilising effect arises whenever two or more electrons with the same spin are present in the degenerate orbitals of a subshell. These electrons tend to exchange their positions and the energy released in this process is called the exchange energy.

 

The maximum number of exchanges can take place when the subshell is either half-filled or completely-filled.

 

E.g., In the case of Cr, when the configuration is 3d5, the electrons can be exchanged in ten ways:
