the man in the poem 'the last bargain' wanted to be hired, yet he refused the offers of the powerful and the wealthy old man,why and what values do we learn from it?

The narrator calls out to people to hire him as he walks down a road. The King, riding in his chariot, offers to hire him with his power. But, the narrator finds this a worthless agreement. The King leaves as his offer is turned down.
The narrator continues to roam around the winding roads even when the doors of houses are closed in the blistering heat of noon. An old, rich man comes out of his house, thinks and offers to give him a job against his bag of gold. He carefully counts his coins, but this bargain too does not appeal to the narrator.
We learn that power and wealth are neither permanent, nor fulfilling. they are not a guarantee for happiness. What is important is freedom and happiness.
