Pretty stands for the outer beauty but beautiful stands for inner beauty.In this statement narrator means that her grandmother is not good or pretty in look but her personality according to narrator is beautiful so he describes her grandmother beautiful.

pretty stands for the external beauty of a person but since the grandmother was old she could never be pretty but beautiful stands for internal beauty and according to author his grandmother was really sweet,kind hearted and a caring person so he describes her as beautiful
