It is so because she appeared in pure white sari and as a beautiful women who is kind and a soothing person to the author. thus the author terms her as an expanse of pure white serenity breathing peace and satisfied with the life.

The narrator tells us that her grandmother is fair;she wears a whire saree, she has greyish white hair and she is calm by nature hence she signified the colur white in every possible way,hence she looked like a winter landscape in the mountains.

the grandmother was always dressed in Spotless white she had silvery hair her white locks spread untidily over her pale and wrinkled face she looks like an expanse of Pure White serenity the stretch of Snow over the mountains looks equally white and peaceful So her silvery locks and white dress made her look like the winter landscape in the mountains

In this line, the author tells about his grandmother. His grandmother was wearing the clothes of white colour. She was looking like that she is being covered by a immaculate snow. Her sonnets which cannot be heard were demulcent for the winter. The author felt to look at her grandmother because her grandmother was giving him a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction. He was full of happiness and peace. So, like this feeling came to the mind of one's individual when he/she see the winter landscape. As it gives the feeling of peace and satisfaction.
