The part of the ear which changes sound vibrartion into nerve impulses

Dear student,

Cochlea is a part of the ear which changes sound vibrartion into nerve impulses.

The cochlea is a tiny organ, coiled like a small shell and filld with a thick fluid. On its inner walls are sensitive, hairlike terminate of the auditory nerve. When the sound waves are tapped out on one end of the cochlea by the ''stirrup'' bone, the fluid inside is set to vibrating, the nerve terminals are agitated, and the message is started along the auditory nerve toward the brain.

The hairs on the cochlea have a piezoelectric coating which sends an electrical signal into the nervous system when the hairs vibrate. Each hair has a different resonant frequency at which it vibrates when excited by sound at that frequency.
