The salary of an officer is increased by 25%. By what percent should the new salary be decreased to restore the original salary?

Let the original salary of officer be 100

Therefore increased salary = (125/100) (100) = 125

Amt. to be decreased from increased salary to obtain original salary = 125 - 100 = 25

Percentage to be reduced = (25/125) * 100 = (1/5) * 100 = 20%

Let the original salary be x
Therefore increased salary = x + ( 25% of x)  = 5x / 4
Amount  to be decreased from increased salary to obtain original salary = 5x/4 - x = x/4
Percentage to be reduced = (x/4) / (5x/4) * 100
                                                = (x/4 * 4/5x) * 100
                                                = 1/5 *100= 20%
