1. During the winter season, the northeast trade winds prevail over the country. These winds blow from land to land and hence give no rain to the country.

2. However, before entering Tamil Nadu, these winds blow over the Bay of Bengal. Thus, they become moisture laden.

3. Once they enter land, the Eastern Ghats act as a barrier and Tamil Nadu coast gets winter rainfall.

During the winter season, north-east trade winds prevail over India. They blow from land to sea and hence, for most part of the country, it is a dry season. However, the Tamil Nadu Coast receives winter rainfall due to these winds. This is because in this region these winds blow from sea to land, thereby carrying moisture along with them.

The low-pressure conditions, over northwestern India, get transferred to the Bay of Bengal by early November. This shift is associated with the occurrence of cyclonic depressions, which originate over the Andaman Sea. These cyclones generally cross the eastern coasts of India cause heavy and widespread rain.

Tamil Nadu has rain during the monsoon season due to the south west trade winds which blow towards the northern hemisphere. Tamil Nadu receives rainfall in the winter season due to north-west trade winds.

Tamil Nadu has rain during the monsoon season due to the southwest trade winds which blow towards the northern hemisphere. Tamil Nadu receives rainfall in the winter season due to northeast trade winds.

Tamil nadu lies on the leeward side for the southwest monsoon winds and receives lesser rainfall. Once the monsoon starts retreating after mid- September, North east monsoon sets in during mid-October. Tamil Nadu lies on the windward side for these winds and hence gets more rainfall during the winter season.

During the winter season, north-east trade winds prevail over India. They are off-shore winds that blow from land to sea and usually do not bring rain. Because of India’s topography however they change their direction and become northeasterly over the Bay of Bengal where they pick up moisture. They then blow towards the Tamil Nadu Coast which receives winter rainfall due to the

A characteristic feature of the cold weather season over the northern plains is the inflow of cyclonic disturbances from the west and the northwest. These low-pressure systems, originate over the Mediterranean Sea and western Asia and move into India, along with the westerly flow. They cause the much-needed winter rains over the plains and snowfall in the mountains. Although the total amount of winter rainfall locally known as ‘mahawat’ is small, they are of immense importance for the cultivation of ‘rabi’ crops. The peninsular region does not have a welldefined cold season. There is hardly any noticeable seasonal change in temperature pattern during winters due to the moderating influence of the sea.

Tamil Nadu is the state which receives monsoon through winter fall during October - December. It is because of the following reasons:
1. The Arabian Branch and the Bay of Bengal branch during June doesn't come to Tamil Nadu because of the physical feature by which the state is surrounded, it prevents them to enter inside the state.
2. As, Tamil Nadu is in the coastal part of the country, the temperature variation is less experienced there due to which it doesn't heat up more during summers and hence on low pressure is created during that time which doesn't attract the Southwest monsoon winds or moisture carrying winds.
3. During October- November, the low pressure created in India due to Sun is shifted to Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere because of its apparent movement which creates high pressure in India and from here the monsoon starts retreating from India. But as the Tamil Nadu is under the influence of surrounded seas and oceans, the pressure remains same there. During the retreat of monsoon, the high pressure is created in Bay of Bengal which brings cyclone in the eastern parts of India like West Bengal, Orrisa etc.., and the North- eastern winds carries moisture from the Bay of Bengal  the when this strike to Tamil Nadu's coast it brings monsoon there.
