The teachings of Islam had a deep impact upon the world. Islam urged its followers to spread the religion. This caused the early Islamic rulers to rapidly spread the Islamic empire called the caliphate. As a result, within a century of Mohammad's death, the whole of Western Asia and northern Africa had come under the Islamic empire where Islam became the main religion. Islam emphasised the equality of all its followers irrespective of national or ethnic origin. As a result, the Islamic empire was able to integrate the populations of its vast regions, all of whom became equal citizens of the caliphate. Indeed, one of the reasons why people readily accepted Islam in the newly conquered territories was because of its emphasis on equality.
