Dear Student,

In the chapter 'The Third Level', Charley is shown as a modern man who suffers from the negative aspects of day to day life. There is prevailing stress, pressure, fear, insecurity and everyday worries which are heightened by the disastrous war. To escape from this, Charley indulges in day dreaming and starts hallucinating a 'Third Level' where things are simple and life is easy. It seems rather unreal but most people have experienced fear, threat, danger, pounding of the heart, tension of muscles, heightening of senses, and the tension in the mind mounting as if it would explode. These experiences are triggered by any number of situations, where our bodies go into a temporary state of what feels like high alert. This also has an adverse impact on our physical, mental, emotional, and social health.   As stress is an inevitable part of our lives, it is necessary to arm ourselves with the necessary skills to counter stress. We must first acknowledge our stress and use strategies to help us cope better with it. We can engage in activities we enjoy. Physical exercise can be very effective in relieving stress. Spending more time on leisure activities such as sports, hobbies, or evening classes or even simple pleasures like listening to music can help one deal with stress .
