According to energy transfer law, only 10% of energy is transferred from one trophic level to other and remaining 90% is lost in the form of heat. During this transfer of energy, the autotrophs capture solar energy and store it as chemical energy of food by photosynthesis. These are then eaten by herbivores which are in turn eaten by carnivores or omnivores. The energy transferred and lost at each trophic level never returns back to previous trophic level and finally to sun.
