These are from chap-2.

1. What do the members of the Otis family do to divert their attention?

2. Who do you think has an upper hand, The Ghost or Mr.Otis?

3. Refusing to be intimidated why does the ghost decide to take the revenge?

4. What drove the ghost to be in a miserable condition?

5. Describe the miserable appearance of the ghost. What drove him to that state of miserable condition?

1) The Otis family did discuss the ghost at some length after its first appearance but it did not really affect their day to day activities. The minister was naturally annoyed to find his present of the Rising Sun Lubricator had not been made use of. He thought of how difficult it would be sleep with such a noise going on outside the bedrooms when the ghost walked about. For the rest of the week, they were left undisturbed except for the continuous renewal of the blood stain on the library floor. The blood stain started changing colours and these kaleidoscopic changes naturally amused the party very much, bets were placed on the subject freely every evening. The only person who refrained from such practices was Virginia.

2) Mr Otis had the upper hand as the ghost finally had to accept defeat. Rationality was winning over superstition.

3) The ghost tried to salvage his reputation by putting on a scary appearance for the second time and this shows that he had the true egotism of the artist as he took care to put on a good spooky performance. He put on his make-up almost as if he was going to perform at the theatre. It took him three hours to get ready and when at last everything was ready, he seemed to be pleased with his reputation. He cared a lot about his reputation and that is why he wanted finesse in his appearance to ensure that there was no way in which he would not be successful in drawing the requisite reaction.
