Dear student,

In earlier times, not everybody could afford to go to the city and obtain education. Learning English was not rare thing in the village. The narrator finds the excessive influence of English in his Kannada community to be disgraceful. Therefore, he calls it a 'priceless commodity' in a derogatory manner. The narrator says that the English language was not learnt and read by much people and it wasn't so popular a decade ago.
