this was a question based on the area of a room asked by meritnation in the test generator of lesson mensuration.

the length of the room is 18ft and the breadth of the room is 12ft

The tiles that Eric chooses have a length of 2 ft and a width of 1 ft each. Each tile has an area of 2 ft2.

What is the area of the room?

  • A )

    60 ft 2

  • B )

    72 ft 2

  • C )

    84 ft 2

  • D )

    96 ft 2

    solution

Draw a rectangle which represents the room of 18 ft length and 12 ft width. Then fit in tiles of length 2 ft and width 1 ft in the rectangle. This can be done as:

It is clear from the figure that a total of 48 tiles can be placed so as to completely cover the floor of the room.

Thus, the area of the room equals the area of 48 tiles.

    Area of 1 tile = 2 ft2

Thus, area of the room = 96 ft2

    The correct answer is D.

    i couldnt understand this .the formula for finding the area of a rectanguar room is l x b.so 18 x 12 =216

    how did 48 come?
