The play "The Proposal throws light on the lifestyle of the landlords of Russia in the 19th century. The farm labours worked on their farms while the landlords led a comfortable life. The landlords were full of pride. They quarrelled over trivial issues. In the play Natalya and Lomov fight over the meadows and then their dogs. 

Chubukov also joins the fight but wants her daughter to get married. This shows that daughters were considered to be a burden. Even aged bachelors were also looked down upon.
