For large value we use large unit and for small values we use small unit in general life. e.g, 24 hours, 5 seconds etc.
but unit do not change the magnitude . In scientific terms we use fundamental units for all type of magnitude.
The standard quantity selected for the purposes of comparison is called unit and the number of times the said unit is contained in the given quantity is called the numeric. Thus, the magnitude x of a physical quantity is expressed as
x = n (u) , where n is the numeric and (u) is the unit.
For example, suppose distance between two places is 160 miles, d =160 miles, it could also be expressed in terms of kilometre. Since a kilometre is a smaller unit than a mile , therefore a larger numerical value is required to express the same distance in kilometre. Therefore, it would be d = 160 miles = 200 miles.
Thus, if a smaller unit is used as compared to a particular unit, then a larger numerical value is used to express the same quantity.
