Two electronic configuration of three elements X,Y and Z are as follows :

X=2,4
Y=2,7
Z=2,1
Two of these elements will combine to form an ionic compound. Write the chemical formula of the compound .

a) X2Y
b) YZ
c) ZY
d) XZ4

Dear Student,
 Ionic bond is formed by transfer of electrons from one atom to another. In this ,one atom can donate electrons to achieve the inert gas electron configuration and the other atom needs electrons to achieve the inert gas configuration.Now according to the given condition,elements Y and Z combine to form an ionic compound by transfer of one electron from Z to Y,i.e Z donates one electrons to Y, to achieve inert gas electronic configuration.
Option C is the correct option,because the rule says that the positively charged ion should come before the negatively charged ion,so here Z is positively charged as it is donating and Y is negatively charged as it is recieving.Therefore option (C) ZY is the correct answer.
