two nearby narrow slits are illuminated by a single monochromatic source. name the pattern obtained on the screen. One of the slits is completely covered .What is the name of the pattern now obtained on the screen.Write two differences between the patterns obtained in the two cases

Dear Student,

case 1, its a double slit interference pattern

case 2 single slit interference pattern

For single slit pattern there is a broad central maxima, secondly one wavelength difference in pathlength of rays from the edges of the single slit produces destructive interference as light from middle of the slit differs by half wavelength as a result we obtain a minima.

For double slit, there is no broad central maxima like that of a single slit, but instead there are series of maxima and minima with the range of one maxima of a single slit. Secondly one wavelength difference in path length of rays from double slit produces constructive interference, Maxima is formed.
