Dear student,

Diary entry describing your visit to a historical place

Dear Diary,

Ancient ruins and temples have always fascinated me. The history mired in their stones and facades holds an appeal like no other. Hence when I got an opportunity to visit Hampi, the twelfth century temple town in Karnataka and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, I was delighted. I went with my family and visited Hampi under the expert guidance of a historical guide. We saw the Virupaksha temple, the remains of the Vijayanagara town and the Tungabhadra River.

I was transported to another world all together at this beautiful historic place! The stories of brave kings and their soldiers, grandeur of the temple structures, temple dancers and priests, queens and their maids, the trade and arts that boomed at that time, and the international relations that were at their zenith mesmerized me. I leant that in the 15th century, Hampi was the second largest city in the world, second only to Beijing and students from all over the world came to learn scriptures and the art of temple construction here.

What struck me the most was how sturdy and perfectly constructed the temples and other structures were at that time that they have survived the vagaries of nature and we can see them after seven centuries. I was dumbfounded at this thought. When I came back even then I thought about my visit for a long time, and then bought a book on Hampi. Reading it I became a proud Indian, knowing about the expertise of the architects, the beauty of the many rituals, the commerce that prospered there and the perfect town planning that took place.

I must say our history teaches us a lot, and to see history through old towns and temples is a great experience.

Good night diary.

Regards
