Under what circumstances squamous epithelium is termed as stratified squamous epithelium?

Squamous Epithelium is made up of a single layer of flat cells. The cells are in contact with the basement membrane. When these tissues are arranged in many layers such that only one layer is in contact with the basement membrane, then we call squamous epithelium as stratified squamous epithelium.
