Underground stems of plants spread to new niches?? What do u mean by this statement??

Dear student,,the particular area within habitat occupied by an organism is called niche.The underground stem gets modified for different functions like perrenation,food storage etc.These stems get modified to perform the function of protection.since no two organisms can occupy same niche as a result modification occurs.
