Using the concept of colligative property explain the concept of anti- freeze solution in the car radiator and use of sodium chloride or calcium chloride in cold countries

Dear student,

The concept behind the use of anti- freeze solution in car- radiator and use of sodium chloride or calcium chloride in cold countries is based on the colligative property known as depression in freezing point. In this the addition of solutes such as ethylene glycol (anti-freeze) and salts such as sodium or calcium chloride reduces or depresses the freezing point of the solution than the freezing point of the pure solvent.
As a result radiators do not freeze in cold conditions and lowering the freezing point also melts the road ice in cold countries thereby preventing the accumulation of dangerous slippery ice.

Thanks and regards.
