Your mother often feels bad as her children travel in a small car as your neighbours children travel in a big SUV. She has therefore, asked your father to buy an SUV for your family also.
(a) Do you agree with your mother ? Give two reasons to support your answer.
(b) Give an example by which you can contribute in reduction of air pollution.
(c) What should government do to reduce air pollution ?

Dear Student,

1. We will not agree with mother. See, when one is looking for a new car, he/she will look for fuel efficient vehicle which is also a less polluting vehicle. These vehicles can help the environment while potentially saving money on fuel.
If small car is upgraded to Euro IV and BS-IV emission norms and if car has fuel economy of 40 -50 mpg, then small car is fuel efficient and less polluting vehicle. and so we do not need to buy SUV.

2. We can contribute in reducing air pollution by:
  • Planting trees
  • Avoid using aerosols
  • Limit driving by car sharing, car pooling, walking for short distances, using public transport
  • Using unleaded petrol
  • Using environment friendly cleaners
  • Use composting technique instead of burning garden waste
 3. Role of Government in reducing air pollution:
  • Protection of forest cover
  • forest fires should be checked
  • Development of green belts around densely populated cities
  • Redesigning automobile engine in order to reduce emission which causes pollution
  • Use of railway steam engine should stop as coal burning produces large amount of poisonous gases.
