Virginia was the only one in the family who did not enter into the joke about the blood stain changing colour and very nearly cried the morning it was emerald green. This was because Virginia was aware of the fact that the ghost had been stealing the paints out of her box to furbish the blood stain in the library. Therefore, it is evident that she had figured out the ghost's ploy of trying to seek attention towards himself by keeping up this charade. It must have occurred to her then that the ghost was forlorn and lonely and terribly in need of company. Virginia was a sensitive as well as a sensible girl, while the others were too busy rationalising everything that happened around them, they never really thought about the ghost and his past. Virginia was patient and willing to listen, she had a heart that could help anyone, human or ghost as well as a indomitable spirit which gave her the purity of her soul.
