Ways to increase and decrease friction
To decrease friction:
1) using a lubricant film between moving parts.
2) using low friction materials, such as Teflon.
3) reducing surface roughness.
4) decreasing the contact force (perpendicular to direction of moving) between moving parts
Doing the opposite, friction is increased.
To increase friction:
1) tyres have designs and patterns with grooves on the surface to increase friction with road . This prevents slipping of the types on wet road.
2) sand and gravel is strewn on slippery ground during the rainy season to increase fiction. it is then easier to walk on ground.
3) spikes are provided in the soles of shoes used by players and atheletes to increase friction so that they get a firm grip on the ground.
4) gymnasts apply a coarse substancee on the hands to improve their grip.
