We have not inherited this earth from our forefathers; we have borrowed it from our children”.

The wise words were pronounced by Mr. Lester Brown, the author of The Global Economic Prospect. The Earth we live on is not our sole property and does not belong to us alone. It is a gift bestowed to us by our ancestors. We must be considerate of it so that when we bequeath it to our successors with its magnificent riches. The benefits we reap today are not for us alone. Let us not be selfish to not think of our children and consume all the earth's principal biological systems – fisheries, forests, grasslands and crop lands – on our own. We are talking about sustainable development. Let us not strip the natural world of resources future generations would need. It is a partnership between not just the nature and human beings but between one generation and another as well. Our development, be it in any sector, shall prove a boon for generations to come. They should not be encompassed by a planet that has little to offer to them.

The repercussions of Industrial Revolution are living on long till now. Technological advancement is a benediction we must use wisely. The nature should not be exploited to such an extent that we are left in utter bewilderment. We must realise the responsibility and not sabotage the ecology. Let us make this world a better place for those who are yet unborn. Let us not deliver them a world exhausted of all the resources, a world sans a healthy environment.

People shall demonstrate and others may follow to conserve this blue green planet. What a transformation would be effected if more businessmen shared the view of the Chairman of Du Pont, Mr. Edgar S. Woolard, who declared himself to be the Company's “Chief Environmental Officer”. He said, “Our continued existence as a leading manufacturer requires that we excel in environmental performance.” Let us be greatfull to mother nature and keep Margaret Thatcher's felicitous words, “No generation has a freehold on this earth. All we have is a life tenancy– with a full repairing lease”.
