"we were not complaining,sir." wht it means

The two boys worked very hard day and night. They looked tired. Out of sympathy, the narrator had asked the boys whether they needed to work this much hard. The above lines meant that the boys were very self-respecting and did not want sympathy from anyone. They were focussed and committed and did not complain about their situation.
