The novel 'The name of the Rose' was a huge success. More than 10 million copies of the novel were sold. The novel combined elements of metaphysics, theology and medieval history. Umberto Eco believed that the depth, varied and the thought-provoking nature of the novel was the main reason why it was appreciated. However, he admitted that the exact reason for the success of the novel was not known to him.
