What are alloys ? How are they useful to us ? Are the gold bangles worn by your mother made of pure gold ?

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

When a metal is mixed with another element, which may be a metal or a non-metal such that a new substance of homogeneous composition is obtained, the substance obtained is known as an alloy. An alloy is thus a homogeneous mixture of two or more metals, or a metal and a non-metal.   The alloy is chemically more stable than the component elements.

Uses of alloys:
  • Steel is used in construction. Steel is made by adding small bits of Carbon into iron (Fe) usually 1% carbon are used.
  • Metals are made stronger and harder by adding small amounts of another element, e.g. tin is added to Copper to get bronze which is stronger than both elements.
  • Metals have become less likely to corrode by alloying, e.g. stainless steel alloys are a combination of iron, chromium and nickel is particularly resistant to corrosion, in contrast to the rusting phenomenon that consumes ordinary steel.
  • Superalloys of nickel and cobalt are used in aircraft engines due to their corrosion- and heat-resistance.
No, the bangles worn as jewellery by our mothers is not pure gold. Pure gold is 24 karat gold.  It has lesser hardness and can lose its shape easily. So, is not suitable for making jewellery.
