What are Buckminsterfullerene's uses?

Dear student,

Buckminsterfullerene is the smallest fullerene molecule. A fullerene is a molecule made of only carbon. It has a variety of shapes like spherical, ellipsoid, or tubes but they are hollow. In Buckministersfullerene, there are hexagonal and pentagonal rings but none of the pentagonal rings share an edge.

Its uses are:-

  1. It is used as semiconductors.

  2. It can be used as a molecular filter or a carrier for other molecules.

  3. Compressed buckminsterfullerene can be used as a cutting tool or hardening agent.

  4. Its stability and bonding property make it a good lubricant.

  5. Especially, when fluorine is attached to the exterior which increases the ability of its round shape.

  6. It can also be used as a storage for hydrogen atoms.

It can also be used to hold and transfer safely radioactive wastes and materials.
