What are collocations and also give some examples

Dear Student,
Collocation is the arrangement of different words in a group. It is the juxtaposition of various words coming together to create sense. These sequence of words are put to usage more often than usual. Collocation should not be confused with idioms who had an inner meaning. These are phrases that are recognised as correct in English grammar.

The six main types of collocation that can be derived are:

- adjective+noun, example: tough nut

- noun+noun, example: army of soldiers

- verb+noun, example: flying sikh (denoted to Milkha Singh)

- adverb+adjective, example: magnificently beautiful

- verbs+prepositional phrase, example: to get together

- verb+adverb, example: dance gracefully

A collocation is made up of two or more words that are commonly used together in English. Think of collocations as words that usually go together. There are different kinds of collocations in English. Strong collocations are word pairings that are expected to come together, such as combinations with 'make' and 'do': You make a cup of tea, but you do your homework. Collocations are very common in business settings when certain nouns are routinely combined with certain verbs or adjectives. For example, draw up a contract, set a price, conduct negotiations, etc.
